Taking Divorce to a Higher Power
After 25 years of marriage, New Yorker Micki McWade could no longer tolerate her life with an alcoholic husband. She also knew that navigating her way through a divorce was an ordeal she didn't want to face alone. Already a member of Al-Anon, she searched for divorce support in group form. Finding nothing, she decided to create her own services and modeled it after the 12-step spiritual approach founded by AA and Al-Anon. 17 years later, she has seen one Divorce Recovery group grow to seven, having expanded from White Plains to Rockland County, Long Island, Syracuse and Del Ray Beach, Florida. Personally, Divorce Recovery allowed Ms. McWade to choose growth over bitterness and gave her an essential partnership with a higher power. Through it she began a career as a social worker, grew a stronger bond with her children and hasn’t looked back.
